A near-future false Utopian novel, with Mormon and feminist themes throughout. In the year 2025, Luke, a gay man in a decade old marriage suddenly flees his home in a highly-populated, anti-technology and firmly patriarchal Mormon belt, to the supposed feminist utopia that occupies most of the eastern United States. In the East, a land democratically lead almost exclusively by women, crime is non-existent, the economy is booming and near endless solar power fuels a technological revolution.

Luke heads there with the hope that a feminine understanding of his masculinity will help to cure him of his homosexuality, as it apparently has for his secret high school boyfriend, so that he can return to his family and finally be at peace. But underneath the surface, power structures have emerged in this near-utopia that, while benevolent to the men who have willingly given up power to lead to women, is devastating lives in its unwillingness to admit the complications of gender and sexuality. In attempting to assert their right to rule by divine nature of their more sensitive and nurturing spirits, as well as their much greater self-control in all sensual realms, these neo-feminists must remove any complications to their doctrine by denying the existence of homosexuality, female sexual desire and the need for parity in society and the suppression of anyone who represents these realities.

I want to write this book to explore a number of things. One, the limits of a misguided sense of femininity and feminism in healing society. Two, what would it be like to be and the moral dilemmas of gay man who feels trapped in a heterosexual marriage (I have a hunch that there are readers of this blog who assume that this is my situation, but it is not). Three, to explore what I think the near future might look like for Mormons, technology and a shifting society.

I also want to write this book to find a loving tone for feminism and Mormonism, the two greatest intellectual influences in my life, while still critiquing some of the extreme interpretations that can stem from these life-views.

Other projects:

A personal faith narrative, that gives the bigger picture of my faith journey.
Finishing the fantastical retelling of the three Nephites story that I started years ago.
Something not having anything to do with Mormons. Maybe more Here books.
